John Cuthbert Salmon was born on the 28th of February 1844 in Colchester, Essex. He specialized in painting landscapes, in both oil and watercolor of subjects mainly in North Wales, Scotland and on the Thames. He lived in Liverpool during the 1880's, then lived in Wales till his death in1917. Most of his time was spent living first at Tal-y-bont then at Deganwy near Llandudno and painting in North Wales. Most of his Royal Academy exhibits are of Welsh views as in this instance. His first exhibit at the Royal Academy was in 1878. He was a member of the Liverpool Academy of Arts, and examples of his work may be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He is exhibited also at the Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham. He was a member of Royal Institute of Oil Painters, British Institute and Royal Society of Artists.
